The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently designated nine more product categories to its BioPreferred program. This action increased the number of products eligible for BioPreferred designation by more than 1,000 to 5,600, many of which contain sustainable, U.S. soy. To qualify for designation, a product must contain a significant amount of renewable materials. The program requires the federal government to give these products preference in purchasing beginning Oct. 27, 2010. Additionally, the proposed BioPreferred labeling program will create a product label to appear on qualifying products on store shelves to help consumers identify certified biobased products.
