Bioplastics Sector Lambasts Oxo-Degradable Additive

The European bioplastics industry has launched a scathing attack on manufacturers of plastics containing oxo-degradable additives, saying they fail to comply with international standards on biodegradability or compostability.

These manufacturers are making false environmental claims because oxo-biodegradation is not the result of a biodegradation process but a chemical reaction, European Bioplastics said in a position paper issued on Wednesday.

This is "not a solution to the waste problem but rather the conversion of visible contaminants into invisible contaminants", according to the position paper. These products could confuse consumers and damage the reputation of the bioplastics industry, the association said.
