Coordinator, Sustainable Biomaterials Collaborative & Sustainable Plastics Initiative
The Institute for Local Self-Reliance seeks a full-time talented professional to coordinate its Sustainable Plastics Initiative and the Sustainable Biomaterials Collaborative. The Sustainable Plastics Initiative is a project exploring the potential of bio-based plastics to substitute for petroleum-based products and packaging. The Sustainable Biomaterials Collaborative is a newly formed network of organizations working to advance the development and widespread adoption of sustainable biomaterials. These two projects complement each other.
Job responsibilities include:- Working with the steering committee of the Sustainable Biomaterials Collaborative to coordinate the Collaborative's work (such as launching sustainable bioplastic purchasing guidelines and specifications, coordinating conference calls, performing targeted research, and communicating with other organizations);
- Maintaining web content for www.sustainablebiomaterials.org and www.sustainableplastics.org;
- Tracking and evaluating bioproduct companies and products;
- Documenting "model" early adopters using or promoting biobased products (e.g., composters or companies adopting sustainable biomaterial purchasing specifications);
- Exploring how the emerging bio-economy can be shaped into a homegrown economy that sustains local jobs and businesses;
- Tracking and documenting new market opportunities for sustainable biomaterials; and
- Communicating with businesses, institutions, and NGOs, and representing ILSR and the Collaborative.
- Min. 3 years work experience in the recycling/composting, plastics, biomass/agriculture, environmental/sustainability or related fields
- Excellent written, verbal, and facilitation skills
- Excellent computer and research skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Willingness to travel as necessary
- Experience working with a diverse group of stakeholders a plus
