The Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) and Rodale Institute are providing a comprehensive one-day training for existing and potential compost practitioners and policy makers. The event will be held at Rodale’s state-of-the-art research facility and compost yard that are part of an existing food and yard waste composting operation. The US Environmental Protection Agency is providing funding support for the training session.
The program will include both classroom and on-site sessions about food scraps generation issues, hauling, and composting practices so that participants are informed about all aspects of running a successful food composting operation. In addition, the session will highlight other food composting initiatives in the region.
Speakers:
- Mark (Coach) Smallwood, Rodale Institute, Executive Director, will welcome and introduce the group to the work and history of the Institute.
- Jeff Moyer, Rodale Institute, Director of Farm Operations, will provide an overview of the food composting process.
- Patty Olenick, Weis Markets, Sustainability Specialist, will discuss her company’s food composting pilot projects.
- Leah Nichols, Rodale Inc. Food Service will describe the food scraps collection practices at Rodale Publishing.
- Andy Barsky, Sodexo, Senior GM Food and Nutrition Service, will present his company’s pre-consumer food scraps composting program with the Lehigh Valley Health Network.
- Ned Foley, Two Particular Acres, Owner, will highlight his experiences with on-farm composting and his
involvement with other initiatives in the state.
- Bob Cougle, Cougle Recycling, Inc., Owner, will give a presentation from the perspective of a food scraps hauler.
